CALL FOR PAPERS: HAITIAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION'S 29TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN
NEW ORLEANS, NOVEMBER 1–4, 2017
The Haitian Studies Association (HSA) has issued a Call for Papers for its
29th annual conference, Haiti: Paradoxes, Contradictions, Intersections in
the Making of a People, November 1–4 at Xavier University of Louisiana and
the Tulane University Roger Thayer Stone Center for Latin American Studies
in New Orleans, Louisiana. HSA seeks proposals for individual papers,
panels, roundtables, cultural exhibits and performances. This will mark
the organization's first meeting in New Orleans, a city that shares
significant and intriguing connections with Haiti.
The meeting, which brings together research from all disciplines, will
seek to address the nature, scope, and dynamics of citizenship in the
making of a Haitian people. It will reflect on the concept of rights;
critically engage the multiple and contested meaning of citizenship;
explore how the "right to have rights" has evolved in parallel in
Louisiana/NOLA; and observe and assess a paradox, where NOLA finds itself
in a contradictory position, sponsoring development projects in Haiti
while similar features of exclusion and environmental catastrophes affect
a large segment of its population (Hurricane Jeanne 2004, Hurricane
Katrina 2005, Goudou Goudou 2010, and Hurricane Matthew 2016).
Since its founding in 1989 HSA—in Haitian Creole, Asosyasyon Etid Ayisyèn
(AEA), and in French, Association des Études Haïtiennes (AEH)—has provided
a forum for the exchange and dissemination of ideas and knowledge in order
to inform pedagogy, practice, and policy about Haiti in a global context.
Its interdisciplinary activities include but are not limited to an annual
conference, the Journal of Haitian Studies (the publication of HSA),
symposia on Haitian bi-lingual education, roundtable policy discussions,
and public lectures.
In New Orleans the HSA meeting is co-sponsored by University of California
Santa Barbara; University of Massachusetts, Boston; Xavier University of
Louisiana, the Tulane University Roger Thayer Stone Center for Latin
