You are quite right Jacqui with respect to Christophe. It was Petion and
Boyer who undermined the system in the South and West and later in the
North after Christophe died. The one additional point I would make is
that King Henry Christophe did not invent that system. He simply adopted
it, as Toussaint had already implemented it first, and then Dessalines
after independence. It was their way of keeping the nation prosperous and
strong. Dessalines was killed partially because he sought to regulate land
ownership in the Southern part of the country in order to implement the
same system across the nation. It would have maintain Haiti prosperity.
Christophe implemented the system in the North where land ownership was
not in contention (it was state owned), and sought better tools and
techniques to improve production (as the letters in his correspondence
with Wilberforce and Clarkson make clear). He, by the way had also
implemented a well-structure educational system requiring every young
person of a certain age to attend school. Boyer also destroyed all the
schools by making them military encampments.
