The replies to Lois Wilken's inquiry are interesting, especially that
there is NO mention of the artist. I did a rapid search of the types of
images this publisher used during the period and saw nothing like the
"Dew" cover. Here is a quess: Langston Hughes had connections with
Haiti and it may be that he sought out an image from among the several
available from the numerous art galleries, including the Centre d'Art
and had that used for the cover. It does look like a Haitian painting to
me. If anyone finds out who the artist is I would very much like to
know. Of course it is disgraceful that the publisher did not give
credit.
It reminds me of the several times in other Caribbean islands I
have seen souvenirs for sale that were definitely made in Haiti but
marked with the name of the island where they are being sold.
