Subject: Le Centre D'Art, Celebrating 70th Anniversary From: "Leonie Hermantin" <lhermantin@xxxxxxxxx> *Le Centre DArt* *Cradle of Haitian Art* *1944-2014* *Celebrating 70 years of Preservation, Creation and Promotion of Haitian Artistic Expression* *One cannot build a city, a country in a day. To do so requires the contribution of many, each creating beauty in the space they occupy Francine Murat, Le Centre DArt Director* *Created in 1944 under the leadership of American watercolorist DeWitt Peters, Le Centre DArt, officially recognized in 1947, played a critical role in the history of Haitian visual art. * *Both a gallery and a learning space, Le Centre DArt is a forum for a unique mix of people in Haiti: intellectuals, art critics, artisans and world-renowned visitors. This incubator of the arts has fostered the emergence of several generations of famous artists: Hector Hyppolite, Rigaud Benoit, Georges Liautaud, and Edouard Duval-Carié, to name a few. Le Centre DArt is credited for the emergence in Haiti the "naif" (or primitive) art movement on the international art scene.* *Le Centre DArt was also responsible for the creation of the Haitian Art Museum of the College of St. Pierre, and for the murals of the Episcopalian Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.* *Early on Le Centre DArt created a market for Haitian Art. International institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York sought out Le Centre DArt in their search for Haitian painters. Le Centre DArt is also responsible for the creation of the first Haitian visual arts magazine, "STUDIO No. 3".* *In 1965, Francine Murat took over from DeWitt Peters and skillfully continued and built upon the founders vision for the center. She kept the centers spirit alive and managed to maintain its prestige until its collapse on January 10th, 2010. Francine Murat died in February 2010 at the age of 91.* -- Leonie M. Hermantin
