[CTS] serious problems

Ok, i went to bed last night and everything was fine and woke up today, =
went to work, and come home and lo and behold windows will not even start =
up on my computer?
gets passed the startup screen and almost logs in and says
that these
" 3 files are missing or corrupted:
hihem.sys
dblbuff.sys
ifshlp.sys
all in the c:windows directory."
then it says cannot load windows bc win.com is not found and it goes to =
the c:/ prompt?
then nothing.
restart, same thing.
boot into safe mode, same thing?
i was downloading a couple things last night, but with my agnitum =
firewall, norton 2001 antivirus, reg cleaner, and lavasoft, i thought i =
was pretty damn clean...?
did i really get this malicious of a virus that wiped my drive up?
i had a ton of stuff that i need to get back into even to move it on to cd =
disk somehow?
is there a way without completely cleaning the hard drive out?
i have windows 98se, ie 6, a 40gig c: and 80gig d: partitions.
e and f dvd rom and cdrw drives.
512 ram, 1 ghz.
i tried to do scanreg/restore and it told me that the registry could not =
be found?
how in the .........?
i am deeply confused how this is possible when i did not mess with the =
registry, system directory or do anything malicious last night.
and i definately didnt get anything that made me suspect someone was =
hacking me or i had a virus?
please tell me all my sound files on the d partition will not be deleted =
on reformat.
any instructions on avoiding reformating and installing?
if not, instructions on reinstalling windows.
either with reformat, on top, or total overhaul, again?
