Ok, Joe, I got off my butt and found it last night.. But I also found this
little freebie that works just as good.. Except I had to put the HD in tower
(used an external USB2 case) to access it..
I allows you to find the CD keys, but also allows you to find the CD keys on
any HD hooked to your system and it's free.

other 'GOTTA HAVE' system startup files.

The lady has a laptop that was rife with virus, trojans, and dirty underwear.
No system CD or Restore disk.
Owner decided to do it right and bought an O/S, XP Home (OEM)
Elaine now has the machine down to a few select viruses and it still boots

What remains of the original O/S is an unknown. It BOOTS !
The O/S on the machine now has a Product key which may be usable if it can be
salvaged.
What the machine will do other than boot is a BIG unknown !
She's not sure she can get to the web with it ????????
She's not sure if it will run anything ?
SO, to salvage the Product ID, we want the smallest, simplest, fastest tool
that might worm it's way between the creepie crawlers inhabiting that machine ,
latch onto the number and escape to a dialog box where the number can be copied
for future use !
The two scripts that I suggested might do that job........ one is under 300
bytes, and the other is under 600 bytes, and both are designed to do one
thing....... get the Product key.
If she can do that: In, out, copy the key number and reboot with the new XP
CD in the drive she gets the rest of the day off.
The big catch at the moment, she needs java to run the .js and WSH to run the
alternative .vbs script. Apparently the machines has neither.
She is going to try to get to the web to install WSH XP from MS. If the
machine is up to that task and MS is able to install WSH then she simply clicks
on the .vbs file, copies the number from the dialog box, reboots with the XP CD
and waits in the weeds until it installs, wiping out that $90 Product ID
forever.
If none of this works there is a possibility that Magical JellyBeans might ?
It's a small app and does more than Windows so it may be written in Assembly ?
If so she might load that app onto the laptop and get the key that way ?
That's Plan B at the moment !
Much depends on how much time she wants to spend on recovering the key,
installing a new O/S, and getting the machine back to it's owner.
She's shy but I'm sure she'll tell us what's happening.

Yep. Put them anywhere where you can click on them and a box pops up
displaying the product key. On Win 98 it's a set of 5 groups containing 5
numbers each.
One of the scripts is .js so you would have to have Java installed.
The other is.vbs which is opened by the Windows Scripting Host. WSH is on
the Windows Setup in Control Panel/ Add\Remove
Unzip them and try them on that machine........ just for kicks !
