It may not be right, but in theory it will work that way as long as you
have the jumpers on the drives set correctly. Another way to do it is
if you have a set of drive rails. The drive rails would allow you to
actually mount the HD in one of the CD drive bays. Providing of course
that there is more than one in the case. This can be tricky if there is
not much room between the PSU and the Drive bays. You can remove the
front bay cover plate, install the drive and replace the cover plate.
That is if you are not using a very tall tower type case which then
would prevent the cable from reaching the mobo connection.

I'm building P4 system with an Intel motherboard. It supports SATA and I
don't have a SATA drive yet.
My plan was to plug both an IDE HDD and a CD drive onto the same cable
to the IDE controller. There is only one controller. The
problem......... the CD drive goes at the top of the case with the HDD
below. There is no way I can hook the HDD on the end of the ribbon cable
as the Master and connect the CD onto the middle connector as the slave.
I'm assuming either drive can go on either connector but that sure as
hell goes against my grain !
Will setting the jumpers for the HDD as master and the CD as slave work
work although they are plugged onto the wrong connectors. Using Cable
Select makes more sense but I'm so dingy in the head from fighting
everything else in this box that I really have no idea ?
Does anyone know ? Even if you know you'll have a hard time convincing
me that a Master can go in the middle with the Slave on the end of a
ribbon cable. It just ain't fittin'.
