After decades of immigration and the gradual naturalization of this
population, the diversity that characterizes European societies is a reality
that should be neither ignored nor by-passed when attempting to
conceptualize European democracy. Within this recognition framework, the
workshop will explore theories of diverse representation as they apply to
immigration-induced diversity. Representation requires formal political
rights and opportunities for political participation as well as conditions
that encourage active civic engagement. Our second thematic focus will be
the extent to which representative political bodies reflect the
multicultural character of societies. The seminar will therefore also
consider aspects of religious and ethnic representation. Thirdly, conceptual
and theoretical approaches will be tested in a number of case studies chosen
to outline the various strategies used to in order to increase the political
representation of immigrants.

Ethnic Diversity, Göttingen University, Germany)

Session 2: Dealing with Diversity - Religious and Ethnic Representation with
the participation of:
Camil Ungureanu (Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Spain) 
Chris Gilligan (University of the West of Scotland) 
Katia Pilati (University of Trento, Italy) 

Session 3: Theorising Practices with the participation of:
Marianne Takle (Group for Migration and Transnationality, NOVA ? Norwegian
Social Research) 
Roxana Barbulescu (European University Institute, Italy) 
Marta Pérez (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain)
