1. No Way Out, No Way In: Irregular migrant children and families in the UK
Abstract: An estimated 120,000 irregular migrant children live in the UK,
and a large majority of these are either born in the country or migrated to
the UK at a very young age. Successive British governments have provided
irregular migrant children with some entitlement to public services;
however, contradictory and frequently changing rules, cuts to public
spending and broader reforms in the provision of services mean that even
when legal provisions still exist, access to public services has become
limited in practice, which can lead to destitution and social exclusion.

2. Return Visits of the Young Albanian Second Generation in Europe:
Contrasting Themes and Comparative Host Country Perspectives
Abstract: Research on the links of the second generation to their parental
homeland, and return visits in particular, is largely lacking. Drawing on
in-depth interviews with 75 Albanian teenagers in London, Thessaloniki and
Florence, this paper brings a multi-sited perspective on attitudes towards
and experiences of homeland visits.

3. Victims or criminals? The vulnerability of separated children in the
context of migration in the United Kingdom and Italy
Abstract: Despite the periodic and official commitments of the United
Kingdom and Italian governments with regard to separated children's rights
and welfare, academics, non-governmental organisations and international
organisations have widely emphasised that in both countries the effective
protection of children is hindered by harsh immigration laws, policies and
practices. This paper focuses on some of the most critical issues that
emerge from the literature concerning the situation of separated children
in the United Kingdom and Italy, with the aim of highlighting the impact
that national laws, policies and practices have on the framing and
production of their vulnerability.

4. Exploring Children's Experiences of Migration: Movement and Family
Relationships
Abstract: This briefing paper highlights the main themes emerging from a
recent ESRC seminar to explore the ways that children's migration impacts
upon their family relationships and vice-versa, whilst also considering the
similarities and differences in experiences of children from across the
world. The briefing argues that the ways that child migrants are labelled
in policy shape their experience and can include or exclude children, and
that differences in how childhood and young adulthood are defined, between
origin and destination communities, can have implications for their support.
