Kristi Severance Failure to employ correct terminology has consequences beyond
semantics. More efforts are needed to educate people – especially those whose
words are widely disseminated – in the correct use of migration-related
terminology. Current efforts to discuss and address the ‘migration crisis’ in
Europe are marked by polemics, fed in part by imprecise and sometimes
inflammatory terminology used to describe migrants. This also risks

- CNN reported that the refugee and migrant crisis is an issue that will
only increase in importance in 2016, for several reasons.
- A Bloomberg photo essay looks at the difficulties refugees face as winter
temperatures near freezing in Northern France, where thousands of refugees are
living in squalid conditions in the so-called Jungle near Calais.
- AP reported that according to Hurriyet newspaper, Turkish authorities
have raided a workshop in the Aegean coastal city of Izmir and seized more than
1,200 defective life jackets that would have been sold to migrants.
- EU Observer reported that Sweden is demanding measures to block "the
highway" of migrants traversing across Europe, as the inflow of refugees to
Germany has not slowed since September. It mentioned that IOM planned to help
authorities in Libya "stability permitting" to better identify and register
migrants before they ever reach Europe, with similar plans being explored for
Turkey and the FYROM.
- Buzzfeed News reported that nearly 1.1 million people registered as
asylum-seekers in Germany during 2015, the country’s Interior Ministry said
Wednesday.
- Huffington Post posted a blog entitled “Don’t Let 2016 Be The Year We
Forgot About Migrants”.
