refugees arriving in Europe in 2015 has increased pressures and tensions, this
is not a crisis beyond the capability of Europe to manage together as a Union.
We need bold, collective thinking and action to develop a truly comprehensive
approach. There are currently some 60 million people in the world who have
been displaced by persecution, war, conflict or disaster – the most we have
seen in the post-World War II era. However, whereas at that time weary and
war-torn Europe was a place to turn away from and leave behind, it is now at

categories. When looking at numbers of arrivals and deaths in the

facing Europe, it is crucial that data are of good quality and as complete as

| Migration in the News
- Irish Independent, Belfast Telegraph, Irish Examiner, DPA, Al Jazeera,
UK’s Mail Online and Irish Times reported that authorities have recovered the
bodies of at least 36 migrants who drowned off Turkey after their boats
overturned in rough waters as they tried to reach the Greek island of Lesbos,
Tuesday morning.
- Xinhua and CNN picked up IOM’s year end summary report on the number of
migrants and refugees crossing the Mediterranean trying to reach Europe in
2015, marking it the deadliest year on record.
- Politico reported that according to official counts, a disproportionate
number of the migrants heading to Europe are young, unmarried, unaccompanied
males which could radically change the gender balance in European countries in
certain age groups.
- Thomson Reuters reported that the medical charity Medecins Sans
Frontieres has ended its sea rescue operation aimed at reducing the number of
migrants and asylum seekers killed while trying to cross the Mediterranean from
north Africa to Europe, it said on Tuesday.
- Tico Times reported that roughly 8,000 Cuban migrants will continue their
journey to the US this week as talks continue between Central American
countries and Mexico. Costa Rican Foreign Minister Manuel González said that
IOM has been in talks with airlines and bus companies to negotiate prices and
logistics, including food, for the migrants.
