Workshop: Job-related mobility and social inequality beyond national and
transnational spaces

Mobility is for some time already discussed as an aspect of social inequality,
as the configuration of social relationships is significantly influenced by the
access to local resources and thus to wealth, power and social capital in
networks. On the other hand, mobility depends on economic and temporal
resources, so that social inequality is reproduced continuously. In sociology
mobility is often analyzed in terms of international migration. At the same
time, the nation state is increasingly rejected as a theoretical frame, what
leads to the rise of the transnationalism approach and concepts like
methodological cosmopolitanism. Phenomenons such as daily commuting, weekly
commuting, long-distance commuting, varimobility or frequently movers show that
job-related mobility is becoming increasingly complex at regional and local
level as well. Those movements beyond national borders were only rarely
investigated in the context of social inequality processes
so far, although their importance for this is obvious with reference to
growing regional disparities and increasing flexibility requirements.  In this
workshop, theoretical and empirical aspects of inequality and job-related
mobility phenomenons should be discussed. It can be illuminated how to overcome
a methodological nationalism by focusing on lower levels in terms of a
methodological localism. The following questions could be discussed.

To what extent is job-related mobility an expression / indicator of social
inequality?

What are the differences in the (re) production of social inequality in
different forms of mobility?

What resources are needed job-related mobility?

What burdens are associated with job-related mobility?

Is job-related mobility used strategically as an instrument of social
distinction?

What societal effects can be derived?

A parallel session lasts 2 hours and includes 4 to 6 presentations. If you
would like to propose a contribution to the workshop-topic "Job-related
mobility and social inequality beyond national and transnational spaces?,
please submit a title, an abstract (maximum 2000 signs) and your personal
details (name, institution/organization, address and e-mail). Contribution
abstracts should include the research question, the theory and research
context, the applied methods, and results. In addition key words and a
bibliography (maximum of 10 references), should be included.
The contribution has to be submitted to the workshop-organizers until February
28, 2013: knut.petzold@xxxxxxxxxxxxx.
The organizers of the workshop are responsible for collecting the submissions
and selecting the contributions to be included in the workshop.
