On the occasion of the two co-facilitators of the modalities of the process
for adoption of the Global Compact on Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration being
in Geneva next week, we have invited them to an informal exchange with civil
society and others on Friday 2 December, Room XXV Palais des Nations Geneva,
between 9:30 and 12 noon.
We are happy to welcome from New York the two co-facilitators: Ambassador Juan
José Gomez Camacho, Permanent Representative of Mexico to the United Nations,
and Ambassador Jürg Lauber, Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the
United Nations. They will be accompanied by Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, Special
Adviser on Follow-up to the Summit on Addressing Large Movements of Refugees
and Migrants.
We thought to organize this informal meeting as a Geneva complement to a
similar exchange that the co-facilitators had with civil society and others in
New York, at UN HQ Tuesday 22 November. As there, the focus will be on ideas
for an effective process (i.e., modalities) to develop the Global Compact, as
called for by the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants.
In particular, the meeting aims to gather inputs from representatives of civil
society, the private sector, diaspora communities and migrant organizations.
We understand that representatives of states and international organizations
are meeting with the co-facilitators the day before, but we welcome them to
attend this exchange as well.
Of course you are free to frame input as you like. However, keeping in mind
that the Declaration is clear that the process to develop this Global Compact
will be intergovernmental (but not states only), and time-bound (i.e., a
finished Compact to be adopted in 2018), among the many questions that you
might consider:
- precisely how can civil society, the private sector, diaspora communities
and migrant organizations contribute within the process of preparing the
Compact; and
- can you share specific experience of such involvement helping to achieve
results and/or consensus in other processes?
The simple format will include a brief introduction and update from the two
Ambassadors, followed by rounds of input, questions and answers. Written
inputs are warmly welcomed during the meeting and by email ahead; we are happy
to deliver to the co-facilitators up to two pages of such inputs if emailed in
advance to the email contact addresses below.
No pre-registration is required. However, anyone wishing to attend but not in
possession of an accredited badge to enter the Palais des Nations should
complete the attached registration form and return it by no later than 5 pm
