| Dear colleague, The high-level "Athens Meeting on Welcoming Cities for
Refugees: Promoting Inclusion and Protecting Rights” took place 22-23 November.
Participants included the President of Greece, First Ladies of Albania and
Cyprus, the Director General of UNESCO, government ministers, representatives
of international organizations, and civil society organizations. UNESCO, ECCAR
-the European Coalition of Cities against Racism, and the Marianna V.
Vardinoyannis Foundation organized the events. Report at:

An integral part of the conference was a press launch of “Cities Welcoming
Refugees and Migrants: Enhancing effective urban governance in an age of
migration” researched and written by GMPA co-authors: Gabriela Neves de Lima,
Olga Kadysheva and myself. The book provides a first thorough international
mapping and analysis of 'city and migration' issues with focus on Europe;
drawing on a survey of ECCAR member cities, a sweeping review of literature,
and perspectives of international networks on cities and migration. It
identifies an urban governance framework agenda of principles, policy
guidelines and actions common across city approaches. Download at:
