The meeting builds upon a rich heritage of ideas, actions and evidence originally inspired by the Alma Ata Declaration on Primary Health Care (1978) and the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion (1986). These identified intersectoral action and healthy public policy as central elements for the promotion of health, the achievement of health equity, and the realization of health as a human right. Subsequent WHO global health promotion conferences1 cemented key principles for health promotion action. **** These principles have been reinforced in the 2011 Rio Political Declaration on Social Determinants of Health, the 2011 Political Declaration of the UN High-level Meeting of the General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases, and the 2012 Rio+20 Outcome Document (the Future We Want). They are also reflected in many other WHO frameworks, strategies and resolutions, and contribute to the formulation of the post-2015 development goals….”**** ** ** *WHO Director-General addresses health promotion conference* Dr Margaret ChanDirector-General of the World Health Organization**** Opening address at the 8th Global Conference on Health Promotion: http://bit.ly/1bRZo2C **** Conference Presentations: http://slidesha.re/133c6fq **** Conference Videos and webcasts: http://bit.ly/14oX9kt **** ** ** *Health in All Policies - Experiences of the Americas *Sustainable Development and Environmental Health (**SDE**) PAHO/WHO *Document presented at the 8th Global Conference on Health Promotion 2013, Helsinki, Finland, 10 to 14 of June *Available online PDF [68p.] at: http://bit.ly/13aNayK - PAHO toolkit http://www.paho.org/hiap/ **** Also three other WHO regions develop case studies and hold consultations on intersectoral action and Health in All Policies. Tackling the social determinants of health requires governments to coordinate and align different sectors and various types of organizations in the pursuit of health and development. Building effective and coherent governance, whereby all sectors take responsibility for reducing health inequities, is therefore essential. Implementing a Health in All Policies approach is a key component of this process.**** In order to continue building on the evidence and creating a community of practice on Health in All Policies (HiAP), regional projects were organized by the WHO *Regional Offices for Africa (AFRO), South-East Asia (SEARO), and Western Pacific (WPRO).* * *Supported by the Social Determinants of Health Unit in WHO Headquarters and funded in part by the Rockefeller Foundation, WHO regions conducted literature reviews and consultations in order to develop understanding of intersectoral action and opportunities for HiAP. **** WHO regions developed country case studies that showcase challenges and opportunities in implementing HiAP.
