Dear all,

We cordially invite you to a guest lecture *this Thursday, September
24 **(19:00
in A7 - Academiegebouw Groningen),* given by *Arjan Zuiderhoek*, associate
professor in Ancient History at the University of Ghent:

*(Un)equal citizens: honour, power and integration in the Greco-Roman city*

In this talk Arjan Zuiderhoek will examine the development of the ancient
city against a background of rising urbanism - what exactly is it that
makes the Greco-Roman city so unique? As he addresses this question, he
will focus on the (latent) conflict between characteristic political
equality and actual social inequality, and the role that the exchange of
honours played in alleviating these real tensions.

*Dr. Arjan Zuiderhoek is associate professor in Ancient History at the
University of Ghent and has published extensively on the role of cities in
the East Roman Empire. He is author of *The politics of munificence in the
Roman empire: citizens, elites and benefactors in Asia Minor* (Cambridge,
2009) and is currently preparing a volume on the ancient city for Cambridge
University Press.*

This is an open lecture, followed by a discussion, in the cadre of the U4
platform and the BA History course 'The Beautiful City. Conceptualizing the
city in the ancient world', coordinated by Dr. J.W. Drijvers and Dr. C.G.
Williamson. Attendance is free.

With kind regards,

The CRASIS committee
