WEST FRANKFORT BLAZE GUTS AT LEAST FOUR BUSINESSES BY MICHAEL A. THOMAS FOR THE SOUTHERN [Wed Feb 18 2004] WEST FRANKFORT -- At least four West Frankfort businesses were ablaze Tuesday night in a major fire in the 1700 block of East Main Street, in the Frankfort Heights area of the city. Fire crews from at least six departments were called, battling the blaze and trying in vain to save the Frankfort Heights post office in the same block, just east of the buildings. The post office did burn, firefighters said. With flames soaring 50 feet into the air at times, three ladder trucks, from West Frankfort, Benton and Carterville, were fighting the fire. Also responding were firefighters and engines from Thompsonville, Zeigler and Johnston City. The fire was reported a little after 7 p.m. About 8:30 p.m., the facade of the buildings fell toward the middle of Main Street, engulfing West Frankfort snorkel operator Rob Williams in thick dense smoke as flames shot up into the sky. Williams, wearing a breathing unit, was able to climb back down the ladder to safety as the other crews continued to fight the flames. Power was cut off to a two-block area surrounding the fire. The fire is thought to have started in the Yankee Clipper Beauty Shop owned by Cindy Morthland of West Frankfort. The fire was essentially under control by 9:30 p.m., but firefighters remained on the scene and no details on how many buildings were damaged or destroyed was available at presstime.
