The U.S. Fire Administration has received notice of the following
firefighter fatality:
Name: Bret Eugene Neff
Rank: Deputy Fire Chief
Age: 37
Gender: Male
Status: Career
Years of Service: 20 months
Date of Incident: 02/23/2004
Time of Incident: 1735
Date of Death: 02/23/2004
Fire Department Name: Harford Fire Department
Fire Department Address: 760 Rt 221, PO Box 7, Harford, NY 13784
Fire Department Phone: 607-844-9200
Fire Department Chief: Eric Tennant
Cause of Death: Deputy Fire Chief Neff died of severe internal trauma to
the abdominal region received while working to fill a 750-gallon portable
water pond from a tanker truck. The tanker rolled back, collapsing the
nearly full water pond and pinning Neff against another apparatus.
According to reports, the tanker driver said he accidentally released the
emergency brake as he got out of the vehicle.
Viewing/Wake Arrangements: Thursday, February 26th from 3-7 p.m.
Funeral Arrangements: Private funeral, February 27th at 1 p.m.
