SPECIAL NEWS

AUDUBON LEADS VICTORIOUS FIGHT TO PRESERVE THE NATURAL AND CULTURAL
HERITAGE OF THE WAIMEA VALLEY
In late November, the unique environmental and cultural heritage of
Hawaii's Waimea Valley came perilously close to being lost forever when
the Honolulu City Council voted to accept, in concept, a proposed
settlement plan that would have put 1500 acres of the valley at risk of
development. However, on December 7, in what the Honolulu Advertiser
called "a stunning example of people power," the council reversed its
position, voting unanimously to kill the proposed deal. This occurred
after more than six dozen speakers addressed the Council for three
hours, expressing their vehement opposition to the body's earlier
decision. Audubon was instrumental in this turn of events - organization
president John Flicker flew from New York to Hawaii late last week to
rally support for preservation of the valley. Read more about this
watershed moment for conservation and for Audubon in Hawaii in the
