THE DRAKE PLANETARIUM AND SCIENCE CENTER Presents a lecture by DR. FRANK DRAKE on "The Status of SETI in 2012" American astronomer and physicist, Dr. Drake will discuss the past, present, and future of the search for signs of intelligence among the stars. Monday, June 4, 2012 7 p.m. Norwood High School Mini-Auditorium 2020 Sherman Avenue Norwood, Ohio 45212 After the lecture, attendees are invited to meet Dr. Drake and help celebrate his 82nd birthday with cake and ice cream. FRANK DRAKE, THE FATHER OF SETI at the DRAKE PLANETARIUM AND SCIENCE CENTER Tuesday, June 5, 2012 *2 p.m. - 8 p.m. (*The transit will take between 3 to 7 hours. Estimated optimal viewing time in Cincinnati will be at 6:04 p.m.) One of the rarest of all predictable astronomical events, transits of Venus have fascinated humankind for millennia. There have only been 53 transits of Venus across the Sun between 2000 B.C and 2004 A.D. and the next one won't take place until 2119. So, it is safe to say that this is your last chance to witness this rare and magnificent event! American astronomer and physicist, Dr. Frank Drake, for whom the Drake Planetarium and Science Center is named will be attending the event from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.. Dr. Drake is one of the pioneers in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, including the founding of SETI, mounting the first observational attempts at detecting extraterrestrial communications in 1961 in Project Ozma, developing the Drake equation, and as a creator of the Arecibo Message, a digital encoding of an astronomical and biological description of the Earth and its life forms for transmission into the cosmos. The Drake Planetarium and Science Center will be commemorating the transit throughout the afternoon and evening with educational and entertaining activities including: -Sidewalk Astronomers" from the Cincinnati Astronomical Society will be on hand in front of the planetarium with telescopes fitted with special sun filters. (Safe viewing with special equipment. Do not try to look at the transit yourself. Staring at the Sun with the unprotected eye can cause serious eye damage.) - Hourly showings of the full-dome show "When Venus Transmits the Sun" which will introduce the Drake's new, state-of-the-art projection system made possible by a generous grant from Best Buy. - Question and answer sessions after each showing with Drake Planetarium and Science Center's Executive Director/NASA Ambassador Pamela Bowers. -Lectures by: Dr. Frank Drake - Chairman Emeritus, SETI Institute, Dr. Wes Ryle - Professor of Physics and Director of the Bank of Kentucky Observatory at Thomas More College and Steven Tilford of the Cincinnati Astronomical Society. - Guest appearance by David Abbott, 1999 JEOPARDY! Tournament of Champions winner. - Attendees will be given a free sky chart and instructions on how to use it. - Sample "Transit of Venus" S'mores made in solar ovens. - Hands-on, educational "Makin' It & Takin' It" activities to illustrate the science behind the transit. - Demonstrations of the Drake Planetarium and Science Center/Harvard-Smithsonian MicroObervatory Robotic Telescopes. - Live broadcast of the Transit of Venus 2012 from NASA feeds inside the planetarium and on a large screen out front. - Lego Lab sessions. - Tours of the Drake Planetarium and Science Center.
