You’ll definitely want to buy IYP at some point soon. You can probably still
putter around with the Cessna 172, but your options will open up a lot more
with the registered version.
As for the local airport database, try asking to “view control panel,” and you
should be able to find an “update,” button. Alternatively, maybe asking to
“Update local airport database,” will work, I don’t know for sure.
