A hunter, who is an experienced birder, reports that last week lots of
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers were drumming along Iron Mountain
in the Smyth-Grayson County area or Southwest Virginia in the Hurricane area.
He believes he must have heard more than 15 while turkey hunting.

It is a good time to scout some of your favorite sapsucker breeding
areas -- especially in the Blue Ridge of Northeast Tennessee -- to determine
where we might have breeding birds this year. And, of course, any areas
of the Blue Ridge in Southwest Virginia above 3,000 feet elevation can
be very promising.

Let's go birding.....
