A hunter, who is an experienced birder, reports that last week lots of Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers were drumming along Iron Mountain in the Smyth-Grayson County area or Southwest Virginia in the Hurricane area. He believes he must have heard more than 15 while turkey hunting. It is a good time to scout some of your favorite sapsucker breeding areas -- especially in the Blue Ridge of Northeast Tennessee -- to determine where we might have breeding birds this year. And, of course, any areas of the Blue Ridge in Southwest Virginia above 3,000 feet elevation can be very promising. Let's go birding..... Wallace Coffey Bristol, TN
