I experienced a nice wave of migrants Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 6-7 p.m. at home in Hampton, Carter Co., TN. I followed the birds as they flew ahead of falling shadows, always concentrating in stands of trees still in sunshine. The first Northern Mockingbird of fall put in appearance, as did several Gray Catbirds, a Swainson's Thrush and an Eastern Bluebird. Warblers included American Redstart, Bay-breasted Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, Cape May Warbler, Magnolia Warbler, Tennessee Warbler and Common Yellowthroat. I also had a Red-eyed Vireo, Cedar Waxwings, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (numbers are thinning), Mourning Dove, Northern Flicker, Pileated Woodpecker and Common Crow. Numerous Carolina Chickadees and Tufted Titmice mingled with the migrants. I also had White-breasted Nuthatch, Song Sparrow, Eastern Towhee, American Goldfinch and Northern Cardinal.
