Report on the first field trip of the Mountain Empire Butterfly Club
held Sunday afternoon, April 05, 2008
at Weavers Bend (French Broad River), Cocke County, Tennessee

Although the weather Saturday had been quite stormy, the weather Sunday
was sunny, warm (70's) and calm. Participants for the first Mountain
Empire Butterfly Club field trip were Dianne Draper, Leslie Gibbens,
Don Holt, Larry McDaniel, Mike Poe, Michael Sledjeski, and Mary Anna
Wheat. We arrived at Weaver's Bend in Cocke County, TN at about 2:30
pm and stayed until around 6:30 pm. A total of 18 species of
butterflies were observed, as well as a variety of wildflowers, birds
and more. Non-lepidopteran highlights included:
Birds - Black-throated Green Warblers, a Yellow-throated Warbler, a
pair of Wood Ducks
Insects - a dung beetle, a rove beetle, a Bess Beetle, and two species
of tiger beetle (one green and one brown)
Wildflowers - Fire Pink, Long-spurred Violet, Halberd-leaved Violet,
Yellow Trillium, Poor Robin's Plaintain, Coltsfoot, Plaintain-leaved
Pussytoes, Star Chickweed, and Rue Anemone. Major nectar sources in
the area included Redbud and Autumn Olive.

Butterfly species list: (* For first-of-season records, species marked
with an asterix were previously observed here on a scouting trip on
March 22, 2008)

Pipevine Swallowtail - 1
Zebra Swallowtail
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail*
West Virginia White*
Falcate Orangetip* - (both genders present)
Cabbage White - 1
Spring Azure
Summer Azure*
Silvery Blue - 3
American Snout* - 1
Variegated Fritillary - 1
Meadow Fritillary - 1
Eastern Comma*
Gemmed Satyr
Monarch - 1
Silver-spotted Skipper
Juvenal's Duskywing
Sleepy Duskywing

Many of the participants observed one or more butterfly species that
were "lifers" for them. As for myself, I was pleased to have found
more species in one afternoon here in eastern Tennessee than I saw in
the previous week on a five day trip to South Carolina.
