-----Original Message----- From: Wallace Coffey [mailto:jwcoffey@xxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Wednesday, November 13, 2002 12:47 AM To: Dave Worley Subject: Dave please forward to Bristol list Dave: Please forward this message to the Bristol Birds Net for me. I would appreciate your help. Yesterday evening a virsu message was sent to the Bristol Birds Net and reflected that it came from my computer and was posted to the net by me. It appears that someone was finally able to "hack into" the Bristol Birds Net by using my identification to get past the listserver checker. I am sorry for that problem. It affects me as much as it does you. I think it is only an e-mail virus file and not a system problem. I HAVE TEMPORARILY PLACED A BAN ON ANY MESSAGE SENT TO BRISTOL BIRDS OR TN BIRDS IN MY NAME OR FROM MY E-MAIL ADDRESS OR ANY E-MAIL ADDRESSES I HAVE. OTHERWSIE, I HAVE BLACK BALLED MYSELF FROM THE LIST -- BLOCKED ANY SUCH MESSAGES TO THE LIST. YOU SHOULD NOT GET ANY MAIL FROM THE LIST WITH MY NAME ON IT UNLESS YOU GET A FORWARD MESSAGE SUCH AS THIS FROM DAVE WORLEY STATING THAT I WILL AGAIN BE POSTING. THIS INCLUDES TN-BIRDS. Here is why I believe we were "hacked into" on Bristol Birds. (1) I find no trace of that virus coming into my system from anywhere else except from the Bristol Birds message which you folks got and I got. (2) I have Norton Corporate Antivirus software which is up to date and kept up to date for viruses. It has not detected that virus coming in anywhere in my system including the e-mail that I just got it from ! IF YOU HAVE AN ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM WHICH IDENTIFIED THE NAME OF THIS VIRUS PLEASE E-MAIL ME AND LET ME KNOW SO I CAN WORK ON THAT. IT DOES NOT SHOW UP IN MY VIRUS HISTORY !! THIS WILL NOT KEEP IT OFF THE LISTS. IT WILL HELP ME KEEP IT OFF MY COMPUTER.. (3) You will notice, all of my e-mail postings come from Wallace Coffey <jwcoffey@xxxxxxxxxx> The virus came from jwcoffey <jwcoffey@xxxxxxxxxx>. (4) The message header from the internet provider shows (and you can look if you still have the message) that it was sent from "apparently" = Melissa420278@xxxxxxx (5) I do not know Melissa420278@xxxxxxxx Melissa420278@xxxxxxx is not subscribed to either TN-Birds or Bristol Birds. (6) The header does not indicate that it came from either my Windows Eudora Light Version 1.5.4 (32) or Microsoft Outlook Express 4.72.3110.1 mail program. The headers on mail posts from my computer mail programs shows one or the other. (7) The way this hacker got in was by sending a message to the list and putting "from" jwcoffey@xxxxxxxxxx in the header. The list will not allow anyone to send a message to the list who is not subscribed. It got in by using my e-mail address to let it in. Such an act could be done in any subscribers name. (8) I often have the list to return to me as many as seven or more attempts in one day of someone attempting to send such a virus to either TN-Birds or Bristol-Birds net but the listserver won't let them in because they are not subscribers. I am sent a notice of the attempted virus message. (9) Finally, this may have been a fluke. It appears that all such virus message are randomly, computer generated "broadcasts" of such virus messages. I think they just run through the listserver attempting to put such viruses on each list. My e-mail address was snatched up somewhere in the list posting process and resent in order to beat the system. I hope this is not a forever habit that shuts us down. The reason these are believed to be "randomly, computer" generated is because I get more than a 100 per year. Surely no one will spend a year trying to get just one on a bird list. Enjoy your Bristol-Birds Net and let's hope the virus problem settles down. Let's go birding.....
