By car at Dutch Bottoms (DB) & Rankin Bottoms (RB), Cocke county, 9/24/06, 5:30 - 7:30 PM
Douglas Lake elevation: 977 (approx)

We watched a dozen terns speeding around DB, then finally settle on a shoal close to the highway. Some showed breeding marks (longish, red bill; dark tail), some, nonbreeding (dark carpal-bars); all were smaller than the ring-billed gulls nearby.

DB:

  Great Egret (35)
  Bald eagle (3 imm.)
  Ring-billed gull (32)
  Common tern (12)
  - we didn't see any shorebirds there

Lots of fresh mud at RB - we drove to the Gate Pond: no avocet, or any other birds there; empty shotgun shells on the road.

RB:

 Wood duck (5)
 Mallard (80+)
 Blue-winged teal (22)
 Great Blue heron (14)
 Great Egret (45)
 Black-crowned night-heron (3 imm.)
 Osprey
 Semipalmated plover (8)
 Killdeer (30)
 Lesser yellowlegs (15)
 Spotted sandpiper
 Semipalmated sandpiper
 Least sandpiper (70)
 Stilt sandpiper (9)
