A great time was had by many Bristol Bird Club members last Saturday
afternoon at Steele Creek Park, Bristol, VA. The picnic was at the Civitan
Shelter and featured a bountiful feast, including ribs, hamburgers,
hotdogs, grilled chicken, shrimp and more accompaniments than you can shake
a stick at. Some of these goodies were deviled eggs, tabbouli salad, baked
beans, potato salad, pineapple upside down cake, peach cobbler, and fresh
strawberry ice cream --- YUMMMM!

Topping off the fine feast was the great fellowship. There were almost 40
participating, including Rack, Carol, Sam, Kami, and Jami Cross, Wallace
and Carolyn Coffey, Dave and Diana Worley, Janice and Fred Martin, Ethel
Mason, Bob , Ellen and Charlie Parker, Bert and Lorraine Hale, Larry
McDaniel and Janet Brown, Larry's nephew, Heather Brown, Ed and Julia
Burke, Charles and Carolyn Barry, Tom and J.T. McNeil, Wilma Boy, Judy
Roach, Mary Erwin, Mike Poe, Rob Biller, John Hay, Don Holt, Diane Draper,
Jacki Hinshaw , Chris O'Brien, Bill Grigsby.

Many hands contributed to putting on the picnic. Special thanks to Janice
Martin, Diana Worley, and Carolyn Coffey for taking care of arrangements
with the assistance of Fred, Dave, and Wallace who were assisted by Rob in
cooking the grilled goodies. Thanks to all who brought so many good things
to eat.

The weather cooperated and was quite comfortable on the ridge in the shade
of the trees around the shelter. We did get a little birding in as well. A
House Wren was nesting in the gable of the shelter which was hard to miss.
Many other birds were in evidence in the area. Just before closing the
part, a Summer Tanager came to one of the trees at the shelter giving us
some good looks at a beautiful bird.

The picnic marked the transition of presidents. Thanks to Rack Cross for
his excellent leadership during the past year. I look forward to many more
activities of good birding and fellowship, food and fun with Bristol
Birders in the coming year.
