I spent the afternoon yesterday kayaking around Austin Springs. The water levels on the lakes are still too high for good shorebird habitat, perhaps as evidenced by the Avocets hanging out at Great Lakes pond. I was hoping Douglas reservoir would be down enough to expose Rankin Bottoms, but it does not look like that will happen this weekend from the predicted levels posted on the TVA website. (How is it at Musick's?) Anyway, it was nice to get some close looks at Spotted and Solitary Sandpipers. The best bird was Black Tern, which appeared briefly after I had to wait out a lightning storm huddled under my kayak on the bank near someone's dock. On another note, we observed a small flock of 12 Common Nighthawks at the ETSU womens' soccer game Friday evening, which was a treat. ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: "do-not-reply@xxxxxxxxx" <do-not-reply@xxxxxxxxx> To: dkirschke@xxxxxxxxx Sent: Sunday, September 1, 2013 7:26 AM Subject: eBird Report - Austin Springs, Aug 31, 2013 Austin Springs, Washington, US-TN Aug 31, 2013 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM Protocol: Traveling 3.0 mile(s) Comments: By kayak from Winged Deer Park 14 species Canada Goose 14 Double-crested Cormorant 2 Great Blue Heron 2 Green Heron 1 Black Vulture 5 Osprey 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk 1 Cooper's Hawk 1 Spotted Sandpiper 3 Solitary Sandpiper 2 Black Tern 1 Chimney Swift 10 Tree Swallow 1 American Goldfinch 6 View this checklist online at http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15064707 This report was generated automatically by eBird v3 (http://ebird.org) David Kirschke Johnson City, TN
