Work has begun on the first phase of a birding trail in the Wellfields in Saltville, Va. The trail will be named the " Helen Barbrow Birding Trail", in memory of Helen Barbrow who died unexpectedly on Christmas Eve. Helen had written the original grant for funds to finance the trail. She was an avid birder, the first one to discover what is now the heron rookery on the North Fork of the Holston River. She also wrote the Saltville section in the Clinch Mountain " Discover the Wild Side" Virginia Birding and Wildlife trail. She also was an authority on the wildflowers on both sides of the hills surrounding Saltville as each hill was made up of completely different types of soil. She also was an authority on the digs that are held in Saltville unearthing early signs of Mastodon's. It is very appropriate to honor her with this trail. A second phase of the trail will follow around what is known locally as Mill Cliff coming out near Palmers Mill at a later time. </HTML>
