It was an exciting and informative meeting for the Bristol Bird Club when its August monthly meeting was held Tuesday night. President Dave Worley announced that the site for our planned banquet was not available for the date BBC wanted so it now appears that the BBC Banquet date will be moved to Friday, Sep 24. It will be at the Addilynn United Methodist Church where it has been for the past two years. The church has agreed to host the meeting but the final date needs to be confirmed. Steven Robbins from the City of Kingsport presented the program concerning changes at Meadowview Marsh wetlands and three proposed mitigation tracks now in public review for state and federal permits. V-P Rick Knight, who chairs field trips, announced that the club's field trip to Rankin Bottom is now planned for Saturday, Aug 28, or the following Saturday if needed. More details will be posted soon. Dr. John Moyle, who heads up the BBC Rainforest Adventures Committee, announced that the club would offer two field trips early next year. Both opportunities would be the second week of February and include 10 days of birding and wildlife viewing. A trip to Panama would also include birding by boat on the Panama Canal. A second opportunity would be to Costa Rica. Depending on the number of birders interested in going, one of the trips would be a go. Three birders indicated their intentions to participate. The BBC Mendota Hawkwatch will open early next week according to Tom Hunter who leads that effort. He said he would be working closely with Ron Harrington to coordinate coverage. Tom asked that anyone who could spend time at the lookout to let him know as soon a possible. The tower count will run Aug 30 to Oct 5 this year. Since Hunter has taken over, several new initiatives will begin at Mendota. Mendota will be participating for the first time in the Hawk Migration Assoc. of North America reporting and publishing system. This is a near-real-time international database of hawk counts across the continent. The goal is to have the daily data posted to the database daily. Hunter hopes to soon reach the point that birders can pull up the daily data by computer and know what the coverage and activity is at Mendota in real time when staring up to the tower to participate. Another key aspect of 2010 will be operation of weather data collecting equipment at the site to record the real time weather affecting the site. Treasurer Janice Martin presented an 8-page financial report complete thru Aug 17. It becomes a useful tool as BBC begins to look at revenues and expenses heading into preparations for the 2012 VSO-TOS Joint Annual Meeting sponsored by the Bristol Bird Club. Members of the present Joint Meeting Planning Committee have been very busy during the past month. Those working on the venue options have made numerous trips to area hotels, motels, convention centers and conference centers to get quotes, inspect facilities, talk menu options and get bids for the event. Some have required several contacts and even revisits. A second coordination and planning session for the 2012 meeting will be called by President Worley within a week. BBC has been in contact with the Virginia Society of Ornithology to provide information and questions for the VSO Board of Director's Retreat held earlier this month. The board has responded with suggestions and needed information. A liaison between VSO and BBC has been named and is in place, already working with BBC on several aspects of the event. Those attending the BBC Tuesday meeting were provided with a number of significant details, including some that are in the making but not yet final.
