The auto locking can be changed in the iPod's settings. When the iPod locks, 
though, the apex will naturally disconnect since locking involves entering a 
low power mode, including disconnecting from unused bluetooth devices. When you 
say you have to connect again, though, do you mean by going into settings? You 
should not have to; the iPod will find the apex (if said apex is in terminal 
mode) within ten seconds, usually less, of being turned on. This will happen 
even at the lock screen, so you can use the apex to unlock the iPod.
