Hi Andy, I'm with you with touch screens and are avoiding them for as long
as possible. However one good thing to remember is our BN can act as a
Braille display for some of the devices which might help.

I am normally the go to girl when it comes to tech things however I just
don't like the touch screens so haven't gotten into it yet however watching
things as they are at the moment I might not be able to avoid them for much
longer. I keep hearing of different things that can be done with an app on a
smart phone and think it sounds really interesting but I can't take
advantage of it because I have a very old phone. My phone is so old that
even though I have a bit of a data plan I can't use it to get any emails
because it just doesn't work.

Better stop here I'm going off topic however I just wanted to let you know
that your BN will be able to help you out with a smart phone I'm not totally
sure how much you can do from the BN side of things but at least you can use
it as a Braille display.

From Shaz.
BN QT Apex and PK user.

Subject: [BNU] New address, and nice to be back

| Hi, listers,
|
| A couple of days ago, I finally got around to setting up a home
| e-mail address, mostly because I had an increasing amount of
| messages that had nothing to do with my work duties-especially
| postings from this list. All I wanted to do was "unsubscribe"
| from my old address and get set up with this new one, but what an
| ordeal it turned into! I wasn't responding properly to the
| confirmation messages I got, and it made the whole thing really
| convoluted.
|
| Oh well, I think this brings me "back to the fold", and I look
| forward to BrailleNote topics in all directions. Here's the new
| address: ashields2@xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
|
| So to start things off, here's "an oldie but a goody": have any
| of you heard anything specific about a new or upgraded version of
| the BrailleNote or Apex? This subject was about due to resurface
| anyway, since no one's brought it up in a while. But a friend of
| ours "spoke to someone at HumanWare last week" and claims they
| mentioned something new in the works. In the spirit of full
| disclosure-well, in the spirit of really full disclosure, it's
| just as well this person's not on this list, because we're
| talking about the kind of individual who always knows more than
| you do, or thinks so, and even more, who has met and knows
| everyone important and impressive, and will drop those names for
| the slightest of reasons. I take anything coming from that
| source with about a pound of grains of salt. (Yes, I know, how
| do I really feel, don't hold back!) To be fair, our "friend" is a
| really energetic and tech-savvy person, it's just that you're
| never allowed to forget it. Having said all that, has anyone
| heard anything? I think the browser issue (IE6, and its age) is
| just not going to go away. I agree with Rajmund, who said to me
| that he thinks it won't be long before Bookshare doesn't support
| it. This would be a first-class annoyance and letdown to me (and
| many other Braille readers), since some of us only signed on with
| Bookshare because it became possible to download books directly
| onto the Apex, without dealing with the PC "middleman." We'll see
| how all of that goes. I've never been much interested in
| smartphones or apps or anything involving touchscreens ... so
| far, but I'm thinking circumstances may force me into it
| eventually.
