Volunteer scanners are unable to check out their own books. I have had books in the checkout pool and have seen them while looking for something to proof, and the checkout option does not appear for me at all for my own books. It's a good idea not to have the scanner proof, since most of us call ourselves proofing before we submit, and there are still things that need fixing. I'm not sure if they are unable to checkout the book or to submit the checked out copy. I have no submissions to attempt to checkout.
