Here is an update from Jim about our planning in the area of support for ebooks. I'm going nuts here and need help Lisa Friendly sent me a copy of the post about ebooks, and asked me to comment about some of our unannounced plans. We¹re working on a concept called ³docaccess² with the TRACE Center at University of Wisconsin, to provide on-demand access to PDF and image documents. It¹s not ready for prime-time yet, but we¹re hoping it will work to fix some of these problems. We¹ve also floated some plans with the publishing industry about providing access to locked ebooks, because we think this is an important problem. As Booksharians know, we don¹t take copyrighted digital ebooks except from the publisher or author with written permission. So, we¹re proceeding cautiously with this one. No policy changes yet! So, the main goal of this post is to let you know that we¹re aware of these problems and hoping to come up with some decent solutions. I'm going nuts here and need help Hi Natalie! I buy E-books and this is a common problem. I have found that when I open these books, JAWS will not read them at all. In order to get them to read, I save them as a text file instead of Adobe and then I can read the book. Unfortunately, depending on the publishing house, this might not always work. The "big" publishers place protection on their books which I have not been able to get around...yet! I am going through this with some Jennifer Crusie books I just bought and the company is trying to help me, but they also have not been able to break the protection. If you don't mind me asking, which publisher is this book from? Is it something like Changeling Press or Loose ID? I'm going nuts here and need help Hi everyone, I really apologize for this e-mail, but I'm going out of my mind and I'm hoping someone on this mailing list can help me out in any way possible. Just some background infor: For a while I've been interested in a few ebooks on a particular website. I'd never bought an ebook before, so was very leery. Especailly since two of them came in PDF format. While I haven't had pleasant experiences with PDF, I've done okay. Anyway, so this morning I took a chance and purchase the books. Well, I've been spending practically all day trying to figure out why Jaws won't read them. According to a couple of websites that talked about using screen readers with Adobe, I should be able to read it. However, that hasn't been the case. I'm pretty sure the file is opening, but no matter what I do, I can't seem to read the file. I followed as much as I could of the websites FAQ stuff and I believe I have the right Adobe, but I just can't read it! The books didn't cost me that much, but I would hate to think that I paid money for something that I can't enjoy. I've already e-mailed the website, but as it's Sunday, they won't be responding until at the very least Monday. I'm too nuts over this situation to wait, which is why I'm e-mailing the list. Has anyone had experiences like mine? Did they ever get past them? Or am I just out of luck? I'll say thanks in advance. And if anyone wants to e-mail me privately, my e-mail is lemina007@xxxxxxxxxxx Thanks, Natalie ------ End of Forwarded Message ------ End of Forwarded Message
