If the card wasn't formatted, nothing would be on your card.

Can I suppose that the card was formatted because when I connected the bp to the computer the manual and the notes folder were already there, or am I wrong?

Hmmmmmm...have you noticed when you were actually listening to books on it
that any of those four keys (1, 3, D, or F) didn't seem to be working right?
That's really strange, but all I can suggest is giving it another try. You
shouldn't have to hold those keys down for very long at all.

When I formatted the card, I was using the headset and I heard absolutely
nothing. I pressed the 4 buttons of each corner for a few seconds. I did
twice, but the bp never announced anything.
When I connected the bp to the computer, it allowed me to transfer and the
manual and the note folder were already there.
Any comments?

11 For I know the plans I have for you," says the Lord. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. 12 In those days when you pray, I will listen. 13 If you look for me in earnest, you will find me when you seek me. 14 I will be found by you," says the Lord.
