hi folks. article on the new audio books, hope you find interesting. barrie Overdrive digital audio The National Federation of the Blind is participating in a pilot with OverDrive. OverDrive digital audiobooks are marked up so you can flip to the page number and other things. They can be played on a computer with Windows Media Audio, you can burn a CD, or transfer them to a handheld player or cell phone which will play Windows Media Audio. They are commercially recorded books. The difference between OverDrive and Audible is that Audible is offering audio to the general consumer market. OverDrive is working with libraries to offer digital audio content. They have a management and circulation system so that NFB will be able to loan books directly to the user. Audible does not have this sort of management system for libraries. Audible has 4 different formats with different sound qualities; Overdrive only has one format. They are seeking input especially from the visually impaired population because they worked with talking book readers in the development to make sure it was accessible. netLibrary/Recorded Books are launching an audiobook product in December for libraries. They will have digital audio in Windows Media Audio also. They have a totally different management system and model for libraries than OverDrive does. They will offer audiobooks in two formats - one is lower quality radio format for people who do not have a high speed internet connection but who want to download books. It is an exciting time for libraries and readers in digital audio.
