_The Thief Lord_ by Cornelia Funke narrated by Simon Jones Threatened by Aunt Esther Hartlieb wanting to separate them, Prosper and his five-year-old brother Boniface chose to run away to Venice, which had been the subject of so many of their mother's stories. They certainly never expected Aunt Esther and her overbearing husband to follow them to Italy and to hire a private detective to find them and see them returned to Esther's control. But Victor Goetz finds himself empathising with the two brothers, although he is amazed by the company they are keeping. The two boys have come under the protection of an older boy who has named himself the Thief Lord, and they now live with Moska, Riccio, and Hornet in the Stella Theatre, a dilapidated movie palace in a maze of dark alleys. But when the Thief Lord is hired by someone calling himself the Comte to steal a wooden wing from a figure from a lost merry-go-round, the six children find themselves facing magic and mystery on a large scale, particularly when they find themselves having to deal with a much reduced red-bearded scoundrel in the mix! The story is delightful, with characters I found to be sympathetic and a situation that in spite of being fantastic still seems most natural. And the narration is wonderful! Bonnie L. Sherrell Teacher at Large "Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. For even the very wise cannot see all ends." LOTR "Don't go where I can't follow."
