It was the first day of the Christmas break, and Peter's dad was
supposed to take him out for a delayed birthday treat, but once again
Mr. Schock was going to have to reschedule his intended day with his
son due to business. Peter's last words before he went off with
Margaret, the family's au pair, were "I hate you!"
Only the trip to Darbyshire didn't go exactly as planned, as Kate Dyer
and Peter found themselves in an unplanned encounter with an
anti-gravity machine that instead stranded them in 1763. Threatened by
a frightening individual who's generally called the Tar Man, the
children accept the offer of help made them by Gideon Seymore,
gentleman and cutpurse. The Tar Man wants Peter and Kate in order to
learn the secrets of the machine that brought them to this time, but he
also wants Gideon, who had the effrontery to leave the employ of their
joint boss, Lord Luxon, whose motivations are, well, complicated. But
where has the anti-gravity machine disappeared to when it is found
missing from the Luxon family crypt?
A delightful tale, and the first of a neat trilogy whose other books I
intend to acquire as soon as possible. It was fun to see eighteenth
century England through the eyes of Peter and Kate, and to see the
reaction given them by their new friends and acquaintances. Gerard
Doyle did a wonderful job reading the book. Definitely a series I
intend to complete!
