My SR5 (SR5-3) has the 4 x 4.75” bolt circle stub axles converted from a 5 x
4.75” both front & rear. Fronts are same just shortened, turned down and a new
thread chased on them. Splines on rears are 1.00” minor, 1.080” major x 25
splines.
I have another set of hubs w same stub axles but redrilled for a 4 x 3.625”

On my SR 6 the front hubs are set up to accept the same stub axles as the rear!
This seems unusual to me. I also own the original chassis #14 which is set up
the same. My car (the one I race is chassis #18) is the same. I would like to
know if the older cars, SR 2&3’s, are set up in a similar fashion. I do know
the front uprites are different on the earlier cars.
As a side note I still have 7 rear Uprites, which I had cast, available. These
will fit SR3 and newer. I’ve sold a few to Bobsy talk members.
Cheers

Early Corvairs were 4-lug, but PCD was 4.5", and hubs were integral with swing

Seems odd that Mong would go through the trouble of remachining Chevy hubs, as
I believe there were production cars with suitable 4-lug IRS hubs. I assume the
front wheels of the SR4 had the same PCD (?); were the front hubs also
re-drilled Chevy, or of bespoke Bobsy manufacture? Wonder why he didn't just
use the 5-lug hubs?

Tom,
I had my CV drive flanges made by a machine company in San Diego. They could
not find a broach, so cut the splices with an indexed vertical mill, as I
recall from 23 years ago. They are conical so that the axle nuts are recessed
to clear the CV and half shafts. Photos attached.

Who made your flanges? I tried to have Mark Williams do a set for me. They
declined due to not having the correct broach for the splines.
I am in the process of setting up my car for CVs as well. I made an adapter
that attaches to a machined yoke and then the CV will bolt to the adaptor. I’ll
send a pic to follow this.

Tom,
That's good to know.
The Corvair stub axles have an unusual non standard spline. I discovered that
when I made drive flanges for CV's.
Good to know the Corvette are the same.

They may in fact be the same. I’ve been researching this and it appears 62-63
Vette stub axles are the same as used on the late model Corvair. I was able to
source a set locally and the supplier informed me the axles are the same.

Hi Gordon,
Did you mean IRS Corvair stub axles ?
My recollections are that the SR5 stub axles were modified Corvair.

I peviously owned the SR4. The bolt circle is 4.75.....because those are Chevy
Corvette stub axles, redrilled to 4 lugs. Jerry did not finish the build of the
car. It was sold as a bodyless tub, all else to be completed by buyer or
various car prep people. So, some elements of the car are not standard
Vanguard.
