Hi again, Thank you all for very constructive feedback on my setup. I plan to order it this weekend, but it seems I have to order from 3 different online shops :-| I plan to build it myself and overclock the CPU.When it comes to noise Im not really that concerned, this PC will only be for gaming, I have a very silent mediacenter by the TV, so this machine will be in a separate room.Disk: I think I will go for the Raptor disk, but Ernst where you talking about running system disk in Raid? ( I have never tried it but heard that it?s not good to run Raid on a system disk)
Depends on what Raid you will be using (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redundant_array_of_independent_disks) :)
RAID 0 is striping. This is when you write different data on both disks at the same time. So in theory you can get twice the speed. Real life is ofc different but there is alot of speed to be gained (read some tomshardware articles about it). Problem is, and this is why ppl say not to do it on system disks, that if 1 of the disks fail you loose all data. With 2 disks you double your risk of disk failure. You get to use the accumulated disk space of both disks. So twice the storage as 1 disk.
RAID 1 is mirroring. When data is written to 1 disk, the same data is written to disk number 2. No speedgain, but no speeddrop either. When 1 disk fails you still have the data and can keep running 100% speed. Then you replace broken disk and the raid builds itself so you have 2 disks and are ready for a new failure. You only have the storage of the size of 1 disk.
Other RAIDs are for different uses.If you have 4 disks or more (even number) you can build RAID 1+0 :) Thats disks mirrored and striped. So double speed, double redundancy. But you only have double diskcapasity.
Gotta love it when you have 8x15k SCSI/SAS disks in RAID 1+0 :) TheBog
Vista version. I have read alot about 32 and 64 bit version the last week, it seems like people have some problems, but it also seems like they can be fixed if you plan a bit. I initially wanted 8gb of RAM but found that to become too expensive, but my plan is to get it when the prices comes a bit down, so I think I will go for the 64 bit. If it fails Ill add XP :-) Power.Im not sure I need 1000w, but I also want the PC to be a bit future proof, so I can add an extra 9800x2 card if needed. I also want to run the water cooling from the PC power supply - Ill look at it again, but Microplex tells me that the 1000w is quite silent.790i ultra I have read some forums and test where they use the q6600 on a Asus Striker II extreme and they are able to over clock it quite far, so I believe it will work. But I really appreciate a notice if someone has heard something else. Most have been said already about this setup I guess, but ppl do have different opinions :) One of the computers I use on a regular basis (I live at different places, remember :P) is close to your setup (Q6600, Raptor, 4GB, 64bit Vista, a different nVidia card, different motherboard). The Raptor is a bit noisy, yes, but imo the speed does compensate for it. Also, the noise from the Raptor is not the "fan like" kind of noise that bothers me. The best, though, is probably if u can visit someone with a Raptor to find out if the noise bothers _you_ :). Disk speed/access might very well be a bottleneck of you system, so you might even want to consider a raid setup (Vista loves to access disk, especially if u don't want to turn off indexing, superfetch etc. Yeah, I know they are given low I/O priority, but sometimes that doesn't seem to be enough, hehe). When it comes to the motherboard I am a tiny bit uncertain. Are you gonna OC it? There have been some ppl experiencing data/OS corruption when performing any FSB overclocking for instance :(. Not sure about the latest up-to-date info on this... When it comes to Vista and 32bit v.s. 64bit it depends a little on what you want to do with your computer, but I would definitely consider 64 bit. The main reason is ofc memory. With 32bit Vista you'll have ~3.3-3.4GB of mem recognize by the OS which is good, but not much more. Vista loves memory, and under the assumption that you want to keep this machine as your main desktop for 2-3 years I would not be surprised if you want to add even more memory than the initial 4GB to the machine during its lifetime. I've been running 64bit Vista on two different machines for more than 1/2 year without a single application, driver or stability issue. One of the machines is running 24/7 and the only time it boots is after OS patches (the other one is a laptop and boots quite often, hehe). Some software needs special 64bit versions (e.g. probably your antivirus software), and some old apps/games might not run, but then a dualboot XP (or Virtual XP) is a good option anyway. I guess my bottom line is: consider what applications, games and drivers you're gonna use. Do a little research about the latest drivers, and if ppl had major issues with the apps/games. If not go for the 64bit version; you might very well want the extra memory :) Funcom says that AoC is enhanced for 64bit, which probably also refers to memory usage (that's my guess anyway, hehe). Whatever disk or OS you choose: This is gonna be one heck of a machine :D *drool* Ernst Gunnar alias Fidelis-----Original Message----- From: blotslauget-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:blotslauget- bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Fredrik Salvesen Sent: 17. april 2008 13:08 To: Marius Vasaasen; blotslauget@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [blotslauget] SV: Re: Conan around the corner Hi Everyone, Then I finally got my AoC key from Amazon, so now Im almost ready.. :) Just need a new game PC :( Anyone got a comment to my spec?
