Cool.

FWIW, I had also spoken to these guys in china myself since one of the things they talk about is regenerating optic nerves, but from my side they said you needed something like 20% vision or else they wouldn't really be able to do/promise anything.

Also somewhat expensive, but, might be worth it to be able to see again.

Nolder family returns from China

Since returning home from China, the Nolder family has already begun to notice changes that will forever enhance their lives.

Ryan Nolder, 7, has lived his life with the daily impact of being visually impaired by optic nerve hypoplasia. Ryan has had no vision in his left eye and very limited vision in his right. He is legally blind, and until recently he had no hope of improvement.

With the help of the local community, the Nolder family recently made a month-long trip to China where Ryan received a new treatment that uses umbilical stem cells to regenerate the optic nerve. Although Ryan's vision will never be perfect, it may be vastly improved.

Ryan and his parents, Troy and Amanda Nolder of Orangeburg, began what has been termed "the adventure of a lifetime" over a month ago and returned home
on Dec. 29.

"
In three weeks, after seven years, he was holding a paper and seeing words. It hits you that his life will be forever changed," said Amanda Nolder. "It's
really overwhelming and changes are happening every day."

Amanda Nolder said after two days of flying, the family arrived in China. The hospital where Ryan was treated had not only translators for the English speaking family to utilize, but also everyone on their hospital floor spoke English.

"It made it a lot easier," said Amanda Nolder. "It was one of my biggest worries."

The family spent the majority of time at the hospital. Ryan received treatment every four days. The procedure from start to finish was 30 minutes long. Following the treatment Ryan had to lay on his back and not move for six hours.

"He did great," said Amanda Nolder. "He knew he had to do it."

At the end of Ryan's month of treatments, he received some test to see how his vision had so far improved. The test showed his left eye had light perception and he could even make out large letters. That had never happened before, his mother said.

"We were amazed," said Amanda Nolder. "We still don't know just how much he's going to improve. We have to be patient."

Ryan will receive another test in three months to show how much his vision has improved.

"We already know there's changes, then we'll know how much change," said Amanda Nolder. "Lots of kids were at the hospital with the same diagnosis as Ryan and much worse. They had always been in total darkness. To see them face to face reading letters. When Ryan did it. It's hard to put to words."

"This is a new experience for him," said Amanda Nolder about Ryan's vision increasing. "It's something he's having to learn for himself."

Amanda Nolder said her family has so much appreciation for the doctors in China because they truly are there for the children.

"It was amazing to us to see the changes we saw in children," said Amanda Nolder. "They're doing good things over there. They really are. It was a bit of
culture shock when we got there but everyone was really nice."

The family said the hardest part was being away from family.

Ryan said his favorite part was a giant Buddha they visited twice. Ryan said he loved getting to rub the Buddha's belly for good luck.

On the flight to China, Amanda Nolder said the family flew over Tokyo, Japan. She said the lights of the city were incredible and she wanted to share it
with Ryan. He looked out the window but he couldn't see it.

"He (Ryan) was so aggravated he couldn't see it," said Amanda Nolder.

The return flight also flew over Tokyo at night.

"Ryan looked out the window this time and he could see it. He could see lights and shapes," said Amanda Nolder. "He started to jump up and down with excitement. Just 30 days before he didn't see very far down. It was one of those moments, on the plane, when you're like 'Oh, my gosh.'"

The family is looking forward to seeing how much Ryan's vision has improved. The percentage his sight has increased will guide the decision on whether or
not to seek further treatment, according to Amanda Nolder.
