I use winamp, and that doesn't seem to work. It really just sounds like the recordings were made at a very high volume level, almost to the point of distorting the recording.

Strange indeed. Try this: Turn down the volume setting within the application like WindowsMedia Player. I believe it has its own dedicated volume control slider.
