Art festival winners enjoy a special night

By Gerry Corner

THE CURTAIN came down in style on DaDaFest, the north west's annual deaf and
disability arts festival.

Artists were presented with individually-crafted glass awards, made by blind
artist Alison Jones, at Liverpool's Crown Plaza by Mike McCartney, patron of
North West Disability Arts Forum, who organise the festival.

"It is just fantastic to see the diverse range of talent," said Mike.

Council leader Warren Bradley and Capital of Culture leader Phil Redmond were
also at the glittering prize ceremony, which honoured three Liverpool artists.

Visually impaired singer Andy Coleman won the music category. Performing since
the age of 12, Andrew is a student at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts
and regularly performs at national and international gigs.

Millie Dollar, who specialises in burlesque, scooped the newcomer award. Millie
also runs performance night The Girl Can't Help It on Tuesdays at Heebie
Jeebies, Seel Street.

Comedienne, actress and activist Mandy Colleran picked up the lifetime
achievement award for outstanding work over 20 years.

London-based Charlie Swinbourne won the writers' award and will spend three
weeks working with Coronation Street scriptwriters.

Film-maker Liz Crow collected the new media accolade and will have the chance
to make a 10-minute film in the studios of Colin McKeown's LA Productions.

Manchester's Rosie Lugosi took the performance arts award for her work in
breaking down prejudice associated with mental health, and will be given space
to perform at Liverpool's Unity Theatre in 2008.
