What Would Eve Say?
Genesis 3:20, 4:1-17, 25-26, 5:1-6
Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the
living. (Genesis 3:20 NIV)
How often I have wondered how many blame me. It's not like I could change
things now, but that doesn't stop me from asking God to take away the
horrible memories.
My husband Adam and I had two sons named Cain and Abel. I gave God credit
for the births. Both boys were extremely different. Abel liked tending to
the animals, while Cain was a natural farmer, planting seeds and tilling the
land. Once during the harvest period, Cain offered the Lord a gift of his
produce - the leftovers - while Abel gave God the best from his lambs. God
was not pleased with Cain's effort, and only accepted Abel's offering. Cain,
fit with fury and anger, killed Abel.
I felt responsible for Cain's actions. He deceived God. I, too knew how it
felt to disappoint God - and the consequences that brings. I could have
spared my eldest the price for his selfish decision, if only I had seen the
signs. Cain was cast out from the family because of his crime. I had no idea
the depth of his rage. That may be no excuse, but it's the truth.
Adam and I were shocked and distraught. Was it a flaw in our parenting,
Cain's rebellious streak, or both? I've never been brave enough to ask the
Lord this question.
I am glad to say Adam and I, Earth's first inhabitants, eventually found
happiness. When our third son Seth was born, I gave God glory for his birth
- and with good reason. This new baby could not replace the sons lost, but
it helped mend the emptiness left by their absence. Adam and I were able to
rise above our grief and sad circumstances. God's grace continued to shine
on us, and we went on to have more sons and daughters after Seth.
Lord, Where do I draw the line? Before I do something rash, grant me wisdom
in my decision-making skills. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
