Today's version is v4.4. I was unable to find a changelog from the developer's
website. However I doubt there are many major changes from v4.3 -> v4.4.
A free alternative to this is GFI Backup.

Downloaded/installed/activated fine on Vista x64 OS.
Great-looking GUI - intuitive to navigate and use.
Supports 8 different languages:
(Czech, Dutch, English, French, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian).

it doesnot stands before acronis ti in terms of speed, compression n ui.can
gotd provide acronis ti latest version, it would be much more appreciated.
gotd providing lots of data backup tools eg;paragon drive backup 9 tried it on
win7 but it restarts to make a backup of the system drive (100mb partition)
that win 7 requires to boot.actually it makes double backup c:drive in windows
mode n c+system drive after rebooting for the same task.
when i tried to stop the task while booting it took long time to stop n causes
a hdd check in the drive backup was to saved, i deleted the partial backup file
n uninstalled db9.
used acronis ti for long, its compression is best n fastest at normal
compression(7mins for 30gb) which gives same file size compared to db9 that
took above 30 mins for same 30gb drive.

I agree with previous comments. Why buy when you can get it free?!@#
I use Comodo Internet Security - comes complete with antivirus, firewall, anti.
everything else and there is also a free backup prog.
Just google comodo to help protect yourself.

Well done it works on vista 64 bit and nearly uninstalled everything.
It did fail to remove the directory in Program files named DoubleSafety and the
file in it named uninstall.exe,

Another good freeware alternative for backing up is Macrium Reflect Free. Just
remember to make a boot disc if you're drive imaging. It's very easy and I have
an external HD with 4 machines imaged on it. So far I haven't needed it BUT if
I do, I hopefully can retrieve any software from here again with said image
because it's not reinstalling per se. Or at least that's how I hope it works,
haven't had to find out yet.

I downloaded Insofta Document Backup from GAOTD a while back. I checked this
one out because of differential backup capabilities. I ran a backup of similar,
but less, data than Insofta and used max compression. The resulting zip file
was 3 times the size of the one created by Insofta. Sorry, thumbs down on this
one.

I think that it is an excellent program and not as intrusive as GFI, you notice
this especially when uninstalling with revo.

In a catastrophic systems crash a user can reinstall their Windows and other
system applications easier than their tax records, photos, music, letters, etc.
Therefore, a backup program like today's GOTD definitely has usefulness since
it's geared toward protecting personal files more so than the system files; and
using wizards can make the process more user-friendly overall. In previous
backup GOTD's a number of visitors had questions about what files should be
backed up.
Any decent backup program should know what files and folders need to be backed
up. But just in case, here are the likely candidates in Windows XP. All of
these folders reside inside C:\Documents and Settings\Name, where Name is the
name you use when you log into Windows:
- My Documents
- Desktop
- Application Data
- Favorites
- Local Settings\Application Data
And in Vista, where you can find these folders inside C:\Users\login
- Documents
- Pictures
- Desktop
- Music
- Contacts
- Videos
- AppData
- Favorites
For a purest it goes without saying that, you should back up every day you use
your computer. If you're not a purest (like me) once a week will keep you from
having a coronary should the unspeakable fall upon you. I only back up files
that have been created or changed since the last backup instead of overwriting
each backup. If someone is considering an external HD for backups, go with the
drive that holds about 25-percent more than the source drive you'll be backing
up from. That will allow you to do a full and many incremental backups. One
more general rule: Your backup should be physically separated from your
computer. A backup that will be robbed or destroyed along with the rest of the
computer is not a secure backup.lol

Interesting that most of the comments seem to be positive, but almost
three-quarters of the votes are thumbs-down. It would sure be nice if some of

Twice tried backing up to cd/dvd with Vista. Clicked the cd/dvd button. Twice
program ran backup completely. Finished with an error. Anyone help? Tried
different discs. Most software normally tell you before running their program
that the disc is not compatible.

Great program, works well under Vista Home Premium. To Ashraf, I took your
advice and downloaded GFI Backup, installed ok ran a backup but would not allow
me to restore any files, all the restore options in the program were 'greyed
out' so have uninstalled GFI. T

I used the previous version.
I use it to back up my VS .net projects to one of our network servers. It has
saved me a few times. To be able to pull back a previous version that has been
backed up without having to remember to do it is great.

Didn't try this one, since I use another free application that has been ever so
faithful over the years (I was truly my daughter's hero when she accidentally
deleted her entire iTunes music library on her ipod - and in the computer when
she synced).

GOTD's activation system has made yet another download a waste of time. The
step by step instructions are easy enough for even a moron to follow but after
installing the software and then going through the activation routine, nothing
at all happens except GOTD *eventually* reports:
Failed to connect. Please try again later.
Three or four tries like this and I've given up.

#10 - Cobian is not able to backup or restore multiple versions of your files
like DoubleSafety.
The ability to backup/restore multiple versions of a file is a huge advantage,
especially if you are a creative type (developer, designer, author, etc.) who
tends to update the same file over a period of time. Without multiple versions,
you could get stuck with a corrupted file that gets backed up before you know
there's a problem. I haven't seen many good freeware alternatives that do
multiple versioning, but the best one I've found is AceBackup by the German
software company, AceBIT.

DoubleSafety is a nice backup app using zip compression on individual files
instead of producing an image of your hard drive. It's got a very small
footprint as far as Windows, Windows' Registry, & your hard drive goes, & after
prepping with Portable App Creator [forum @ portableapps.com] you should be
able to run it from your USB stick. DoubleSafety focuses on *Jobs* you create
with a wizard, save, & optionally can run from a shortcut you place on your
desktop - a Job is simply instructions telling the program to backup these
files, using this level of compression, to this destination. Besides backing up
everything in the folders you select, you can add masks to make sure certain
file name extensions aren't included, &/or you can backup only files that were
added or changed since the last backup. DoubleBackup looks at the archive bit
set on/off for every file [right-click files or folders -> properties ->
advanced to set], so you have another quick way to include/exclude files from
an incremental / differential backup [includes files that were modified since
last backup]. DoubleBackup now uses Windows Shadow Copies so in XP & newer it
can include a snapshot of any running files in the backup archive.
The chief advantage of zipped backup archives is you can easily restore just 1
file or folder, even when the archive contains everything on your hard drive, &
for backup you can select just which files/folders to include. The reason for
restoring (or wanting to restore) just one or a few files/folders, is if/when
you know which files/folders need restored, you haven't *just* performed a full
image backup, & you don't want to lose everything you've added to the hard
drive since the last image was created. The reason for backing up just one or a
few folders is it takes less time, & creates smaller archives. You can backup
all or most of your apps, skipping Windows, & unless you perform a program
update, basically forget about them. You can backup the Program Files folder
for example, & then just perform an incremental backup of that folder whenever
you add something new - assuming the new app, like ~99% of Windows apps,
installs into the Program Files folder]. For Windows itself, the critical
folders would be Program Files\Common Files, Windows, & in XP, Documents and
Settings - Vista & 7 users backup Program Data & Users instead - & any files in
the Root directory [click the drive icon or letter, & backup any files not in
folders] *except* hiberfil.sys & pagefile.sys.
The main disadvantages of zipped backup archives are they don't include the
entire disc, including something called the MBR [Master Boot Record] you need
to boot any OS, & it's slower than working with disk images. Getting just one
or a few files/folders out of an existing disk image can sometimes be
challenging, to say the least, & regardless any developer claims - otherwise
there'd be little reason for zip backups to exist. [Please remember that
backups are your insurance against disaster, so there's no room for even a 1%
chance you won't be able to extract what you want/need].
Tip:
Restoring full or partial zipped archives can be a challenge when Windows is
using files you want to replace - actually you can't, & those running files
have to be replaced during a reboot, or boot into DOS/Linux, which is normally
pretty slow decompressing your zip files. One solution is to boot to LiveXP or
similar bootable mini version of Windows, which is faster, but a 2nd solution
is even easier. restore the folder(s), say Windows for example, to the system
drive only with the name _Windows, or Win or something like that -> then boot
into DOS/Linux or whatever & simply rename the folders, from Windows -> WinOld,
& the restored folder, for example if you named it Win -> Windows. Reboot. If
everything works OK, delete the old folder, though be aware that XP doesn't
like to delete such huge folders & may act funky until you reboot afterward.

In my experience they perform at about the same speed, archiving to a 2nd,
internal SATA hard drive. I have only had slower speeds using Paragon when
using *Really* *Cheap* IDE drive adapters (1 USB & 1 SATA).

DoubleSafety uses Starburn, which some folks have problems with. At any rate,
if you have the hard drive space, backup to hard drive & then burn in a
separate step. I make a habit to do it that way anyway, since with a lot of
backup programs any burning error can mean re-starting the backup itself from
scratch.

Either you or GOTD is not connecting. Since you were able to to post that
comment, my guess would be your firewall [or other anti-malware] software
wasn't letting Activate.exe go online & talk to the GOTD servers. If that
doesn't happen, Activate.exe isn't going to do anything.

FWIW, in my experience there is no substitute for saving a project under
different names at milestones as they're reached. Over the years I've never had
problems with file corruption, knock wood, but there have been hundreds of
times where the proj had to start over at one of those milestones.

Re: #35, who had trouble getting Activation to work (and had a LOT of
not-so-nice things to say about it!) -
I had the same problem, but not for very long; The cause was my firewall
blocking the Activation routine from accessing the internet; I'm running (ugh!)
Vista Home Premium SP2 {64-bit}, and Windows Live OneCare (provided by my ISP),
which almost immediately brought up a window telling me there was an unknown
program trying to access the internet, and did I want to let it or not?; Since
I have to follow certain Security Protocols here, I was logged into a "Limited"
User Account at the time, but even so, my system promptly brought up the
"Looking for Credentials" box, I entered my Admin. I.D. into it to allow me to
"tell" the firewall to "Allow" the Activation routine to access the internet,
and that was that, no more problems.
I'm new to GOTD, but teh problem I had so far was certainly no big deal on this
"slightly oddball" system, and with an extra few seconds and one extra PW
entry, I had no problems at all, and the next thing I saw was the "Your
Activation was Successful" message.
You might want to check out your firewall and any anti-malware stuff on your
machine before giving up;
Remember, most software, and especially Backup software, DOES advise you to
"Turn off any Firewall and Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware programs during
installation". While I can't do that normally, I'm also installing a program
from a disc, so I CAN do it after I've unplugged the Ethernet (or telephone)
cable, or turned off the WiFi unit on my machine, while installing something
that I've got the install disc for & that I just paid $30 to $75 or more on,
then I plug the cable back in/turn the WiFi back on and everything's OK again
(since installation from a disc usually doesn't need access to the internet
during installation, or if it does, I can give JUST the installer a "Temporary
permission" to go through the firewall, and still be secure since nothing else
can get through);
There's a reason for that stuff happening;
Try coding some Windows apps sometime - I gave up programming way back when the
6502 "MPU" was replaced by the 68000 processor chip;
8-bits was enough for me, and I didn't have enough time to learn to program all
over again, since programming was a hobby for me, "back in the day";
I "made my bread & butter" in the R.F Engineering R&D, Satellite DataComm, and
TV Broadcasting industries before I retired.
I HAD written a "bulletproof" telecomm program, that ran for about 4 years
without ever being turned off & NEVER crashed or had a problem, and it only
wanted "Human intervention" to keep paper & ink in the printer, and to keep the
"Downloads" & Uploads" disks changed out every couple of weeks to "keep things
interesting", and that was all written in around 30,000-lines of 8-bit
Assembler code.
When the 16-bit machines started coming out, I stopped writing & started buying
my S/W, because I didn't have the time to learn to program in a new language on
a new CPU.
Hey, at least there's still SOME things that are free! I remember the "One
Golden Year" when you could get ANYTHING on the 'net for free, but then,
everything was "pay as you go", and was expensive!, so if you don't want to
code it yourself, then "pony-up" & pay the price!
.And if something's free and it works, then don't malign it, since it WAS free,
after all, and it DOES work! Only "complain" to let people know about things
that DON'T work, and what problem(s) you had with it, so that someone else may
have had the same problem and can help you "fix it", do so.
Good luck, and if you've still got enough time left (when you read this) to try
another install before this one "turns into a pumpkin", try checking your
firewall & so forth, like I described above, since it sounds like that's
probably what the problem you're having is centered around, more or less; and

installed OK on Vista Home Premium 32bit and GUI looks good but it failed with
errors each time I tried to run it so it is gone!!
Reluctantly I must give a thumbs down.
I ran the same backup with Paragon's Backup 9 and it worked a treat and quickly
too.

I downloaded the program, used the activation and..it says unregistered trial
version will expire in 30 days.
I have always gotten the messgae that the software has been activated (via the
webpage popup).so I am pretty sure it is not a firewall issue.My antivirus does
not block what i don`t want to, and even then tells Me it is blocking..I got no
message there..so what is the issue???
Is this only a 30 day trial???

infected with worm:Rogue.Gen from soft:Pdf Zilla.Iscan my whole computer
with:UPC Smart Guard and Iobit Security 360 and find this.Soo not only free
soft have problems sometimes.Scan with your antivirus entire computer.Only when
install software and scan everything you see what you have in computer.When
soft is comprimated is almost waste of time to scan,because almost time you

don't save this report.I click on remove and enter in Quarantine.Next from
:Quarantine i make click right and i delete object,click ok and close.Next i
use:Revo and Argente to remove software from computer.

Exactly a replica of Insofta Document Backup, offered here before, eight down
to the UI. Who is the original?

#35.At this soft i have the same problem but with this problem work good and
make job.Probably solution with Activation is not the best.I loock on my
firewall from Antivirus and is setting to permit :Activation soo here it
work,next i loock on control panel>Windows Firewall at Exception and i don't
see:Activation like in Antivirus suite.But when i make click to browse(Add
program) i don't find.The computer is too big.Where to search?I put my dog to
search on entire computer but not find something usefull.In conclusion probably
work like a trial.

#40 Phoenix NightOwl - actually these apps are strictly speaking not completely
free. You have to download and install them and if you lose them you cannot use
the same downloaded EXE to reinstall them because the Activate app will tell
you you're out of time. Imagine if your hard drive fails and you have no way of
reinstalling the very program you were using for your backups!!
And that's why I would never dream of relying on a backup program from GOTD
other than as a way of evaluating it, which I have no need to do since I have
my current back up needs covered.
I use Acronis True Image to back up my hard drives and Cobian to back up
specific files and folders incrementally. To some that may seem like overkill,
but when your hard drive fails and you have a double bubble backup strategy,
you don't even break into a sweat. I speak from experience.

I have never had a back up tool or system because most of them I reviewed in
the past were just so complicated I felt I would probably never be able to use
them. But, when I looked at the screen shots of DoubleSafty they appeared to be
very user friendly. I am so happy I tried it. This is so easy. I was able to
install the software, back up a file, and restore that file within minutes. I'm
sure there may be more powerful backup tools out there. And that's fine for
those who understand how to use them. But, for me, this is perfect. Having a
backup system now makes me feel a bit more confident that I can restore my
content if I ever loose it. Thanks very much GAOTD for getting this one for
people like me. :-)

Way too slow for me. I prefer, and use, Carbonite. Always in the background and
I never have to think about it or change a drive or insert disks.

I agree with Guiseppe Madre. I've noticed on a lot of these "reviews" that
there are more thumbs down but all the actual comments seem to be positive.
It's really hard to get an honest view of the program when the TD don't share
their reasons.
