Merv,
I can certainly understand why more and more blind people would be
interested in Amazon's products. After all, a Fire gives them so many of
the capabilities they could get in a larger computer for around fifty
dollars and it's certainly cheaper than an iPad. An Echo is affordable
and requires no training with keystrokes or touch gestures. Personally,
I wouldn't give up my Windows computer and switch to a Fire, due to what
I perceive as the odd quirks of Android. Even with a Bluetooth keyboard
I can't imagine doing serious editing on one of those things but, then
again, I guess a lot of people just want it to read Web pages and emails
and document editing isn't part of the picture. In fact, I wouldn't even
give up a Windows machine for an iPad and I love using iOS. However, for
casual reading maybe the Fire performs those tasks well enough to
satisfy people, particularly if you're on a tight budget.

From a technical perspective, I am still volunteering over at the Lighthouse
of Pinellas providing instruction in technology assistance. Lately I have been
getting many more requests for iPhone and iPad assistance than PC assistance.
Now I am even getting questions regarding the Amazon line of Echo and fire
product line. It seems that quite a few people are giving up screen readers and
laptops for less expensive options such as $100 fire tablets or apps they can
use on their voiceover enabled phones.
I am enjoying watching the technology trends as well as being part of the
changing times.
We did just get a few more of the big screen touch screen all in one PC Dells
in my computer lab. I love playing with those. I would go there every day if I
could. Laughs!

I, too, will be staying home and trust that you all will be safe, wherever you
are. How are things in Florida, Merv? (If you've already addressed this,
please disregard my question.)

As we will likely be in for quite a storm tomorrow I wanted to offer
my wishes for safety, if traveling is something you absolutely must do.
Hopefully, all of you will be home, safe from the coming storm. I plan
on working from home tomorrow.
Stay safe.
