Who's on First? I think it was either Abbott or Costello. I know it
wasn't Martin or Lewis. And for sure the Three Stooges didn't know
First Base from Home Plate. And the Marx Brothers were into horses.
As I think about some of those old comedy teams, I wonder why we could
all get such a belly laugh and not hear a single dirty word. Not that
I'm opposed to Blue Humor, but when that's all that is dished up to us
anymore, well...
I never missed a Burns and Allen program. Fibber McGee and Molly
never got old. Fred Allen, Jack Benny, Lucy and Ricky, And never ever
did I hear the Great Gildersleeve utter a single "Damn"! "Who's on
First?" people rolled in the aisles even after hearing the routine
fifty times. Folks today are too up tight, too exposed to violence,
too wrapped up in themselves to just kick back and hold onto their
tummy's.
And the one that always cracks me up...the thief has a gun in the back
of Jack Benny. "Your money or your life," he demands in a hoarse
growl. After a long silence he repeats it, "I said your money or your
life!"
"I'm thinking. I'm thinking!" Benny says. And the audience rolls in
the aisles. It's all in the timing, not in the use of dirty words.
