Miriam-

The 2016 election was one of the most extraordinary in American history, but
one thing remained unchanged: presidential donors were largely white, male,
and wealthy. In fact, donors to all federal elections-congressional and
presidential-tend to be disproportionately white, male, and wealthy.

We all have an uneasy sense that the influx of big-dollar donations to
political campaigns is skewing our democracy. Until now, questions of who
the donors are, demographically, and what their policy views are, remained
largely unexamined.

Today Demos has released a new

d=8b9f6ef00b&e=82148ff32c> report-Whose Voice, Whose Choice?-that for the
first time uncovers the demographics and policy preferences of the donor
class that dominates U.S. campaign funding.

Drawing on unique data sets and original data analyses from 2012 to 2016, we
reveal in stark detail that the donor class is in fact profoundly
unrepresentative of the American population as a whole-particularly of
low-income people, people of color, and women. Our findings include:

*
While about three-quarters of the U.S. electorate is white, 91 percent of
2016 presidential donors were white.

*
97 percent of President-elect Donald Trump's donors are white, and 64
percent are white men.

*
Millionaires make up just 3 percent of the adult population, but comprised
17 percent of donors to the 2016 presidential election.

Not only does the donor class not look like America, it doesn't think like
the rest of us either. Big donors as a whole have policy preferences that
diverge not just from those of the general population, but often from
average Americans in their own party.

And when you look at elite donors-those who give $5,000 or more-the
differences grow even more dramatic.

=94412ced31&e=82148ff32c> Whose Voice, Whose Choice? reveals that on vital
questions related to the economy, redistribution, the size of government and
healthcare, elite donors are far more conservative than average Americans.

The racial, gender and economic inequities that make life a struggle for so
many Americans are baked right into our big-money election system. The donor
class wields outsized influence with candidates and officeholders alike,
resulting in political and policy outcomes that favor the rich and leave
most Americans behind.

In

this happens and what we as a nation can do to change it. I hope you'll take
a look.
