Edward & Lucy,

Thanks for jumping in. Both fo you had good moves for white. I will discuss both in turn.

13. Ng5, as suggested by Edward, is the best move. However, in response black should probably play 13. ... h6 instead of 13. ... Qe7.

After 13. Ng5 Qe7 14. Bd5+ Kh8, it would be a mistake for white to play 15. Qh5 because of 15. ... Nf6, both protecting h7 and attacking the white queen, gaining time for black. This shoudl lead to full equality for black after 16. Qh4 h6 17. Bxc6 Bxc6 18. Nh3 Qf7 19. Bxh6 Qd5 20. Bxg7+ Kxg7 21. Qg5+ Kh1 22. Qh6+ Kg8 23. Qg6+ Kh8 and I cannot find a way for whtie to maintain an attack.

After 13. Ng5 Qe7 14. Bd5+ Kh8, white can do much better with 15. Nxh7.

This being the case, 13. ... h6 seems to be the best defense for black, but after 14. Bd5+ Kh8 14. Nf7+, black pretty much has to give up the exchange (rook for knight). Here is how it could play out: 13. Ng5 h6 14. Bd5+ Kh8 15. Nf7+ Rxf7 16. Bxf7 Nf6 17. Bd2 Qe7 18. Bg6 Qe6 19. f4 e4 20. Ne3 Ne7, and white has material advantage that shoudl lead to a win.

Now for Lucy's idea, 13. Qb3. This leads to a strong game for white after 13. Qb3 Kh8 14. Bg5 Qc7 15. Ne3 Nf6 16. Nd2 Na5 17. Qc2 Be6 18. Ndc4 Nxc4 19. dxc4, and white is decidedly better.

Other good 13th moves for whtie include 13. Rb1, 13. Bd2 and 13. a5, after which white is much better off. But all things considered, I think 13. Ng5 is the strongest of the lot.

Just think - if you two guys had been playing in the Chess Parlor as whtie, you might have beaten one of the country's strongest players!

thanks to both of you for playing "what if???"

I hope I have not made any typos here to mess this up.

Rod
