Hi,

I read Nory Ryan's song on the plane ride to DC this week. It was a
beautiful book. And sad, too. I was delighted by the detail, and the vivid
descriptions of the land and its people, and their struggles. I'll grab the
sequel eventually, just to see if Nory's dream comes true.

Thanks to those who scanned, validated and/or recommended this book.

Lora

Dear Grand Cindy, and Booksharian Friends,

I'm reading my mail out of order, but you know my ears perked up when I
heard "Welsh historical fiction trilogy." Has the group come to a consensus
about what to do about these books. Would you or someone fill me in on or
off list and know I'll join the line of willing validators for that one.

Tonight I uploaded my validation of Nory Ryan's Song, about a 12 year old
girls experiences in Western Ireland at the start of the potato famine. It's
sequel is already in the collection, Maggie's Door. I suggest that anyone
interested in these books for middle school children to adults, read both
and I promise you'll be moved.

Here are the short and long synopses for Nory Ryan's Song.

A blight kills Ireland's potato crop in 1845. 12 year-old Nory Ryan's
courage and ingenuity help her starving family and neighbors survive to flee
for America stranding Nory and old Anna. 10 to adult

By 1845, Nory Ryan's family has lived on Maidin Bay on the west coast of
Ireland for generations. Maidin Bay is a beautiful place, full of magic and
song, but life there is hard. Every year Nory's family plants potatoes while
Da sails away on a fishing boat to earn the rent money for lord Cunningham.
The English lord is bent upon forcing the Irish from their land so that he
can tumble the cottages and clear the fields for grazing sheep. Many people
have left Maidin Bay forever. Nory's own beloved sister Maggie sets off for
Brooklyn, in America and Nory dreams of a time when the Ryans will all live
there together. But a terrible blight attacks the potatoes. No crop means
starvation. And Da does not Return when he usually does. Nory must summon
the courage and ingenuity to find food, to find hope, to find a way to help
her family survive. -Newbery Honor-winning author Patricia Reilly Giff
combines family history and years of research in Ireland with deceptively
simple language in this moving story. Through Nory's eyes she illuminates a
beloved land and brings new and vivid meaning to some of our most basic
ideas: home, family, friendship, and hope. Discover what happens when a 12
year old girl is left alone to care for her 4 year old brother with no
vegetables or animals on the land and no money to buy food. Discover how
people stay alive with nothing to eat. And because she never gives up, find
out what happens to Nory in the sequel to Nory's Song, "Maggie's Door,
which you can also get from Bookshare. These novels are historical and
social fiction based on the author's extensive research of her family's
lives in Ireland. They will inform, grip and inspire readers from fourth
grade to adult.

Maggie's Door, the second book

With healing herbs and food scraps Maggie searches for her family and a ship
to America. She courageously helps herself and others escape Ireland's
tragic potato famine, for older children and adults.

Maggie's Door is the story of the journey from Ireland to America told by
both Nory and her neighbor Sean Red Mallon. Here are two different stories
with the same destination-the home of Nory's sister Maggie in Brooklyn. The
passage is harrowing, but Nory and Sean are pulled onward by a single dream:

to reach Maggie's door. Patricia Reilly Giff calls upon her long research
into Irish history and her great powers as a storyteller in this deeply
involving novel. The incredible challenges of the journey, and the
relationships forged and torn apart by its hardships, will stay with readers
long after they finish this remarkable book.

Always with love,

Lissi
